Quarantine ends at Balmoral

 

There have been no new reported cases of EPV-1 Virus and all  quarantines/restrictions at Balmoral Park have been lifted.  Thanks to all for your cooperation and understanding and please do continue with proper and safe hygiene measures.

 

Equine Herpes Update 5-22-07

 The Indiana restriction of not allowing any horse stabled at Balmoral from Monday, April 23, 2007 to May 14, 2007 to enter their track has been lifted as

of last Sunday.

IMPORTANT - NEW 5/1/07 UPDATE

 

 A suspect horse from other than the already quarantined barn was tested to day and the results were NEGATIVE for the EHV-1 Virus.  To date this virus has been confined to one barn, still under quarantine.  Thanks to all for treating this situation as serious and taking the proper precautions. Refer to posting on this website for additional information.  (Below Gaming Letter).

 

Racing at Balmoral/Maywood continues as scheduled

 

PLEASE NOTE:  EFFECTIVE THIS DATE, SINCE THE SITUATION APPEARS TO BE  UNDER CONTROL AND ISOLATED, THE "SCRATCH WITHOUT PENALTY"  RULING HAS BEEN RESCINDED.

 

 

 

04/26/07 New - Update

 

  STEWARDS ORDER  4 25 07

Effective May 1, 2007, all horses entering or stabling (horses racing, in training, or otherwise stabled) on the grounds of any Illinois pari-mutuel racetrack shall have proof of a current equine herpes vaccination (administered within the last 90 days.

  Re: INDIANA RESTRICTIONS  4 25 07

Hoosier will not allow any horse that was stabled at Balmoral from Monday, April 23, 2007 to May 14, 2007 to enter their track.  (any questions, please check with Hoosier Park race office).   

  BALMORAL/MAYWOOD ENTRIES

No entries will be accepted effective 4/26/07 without certification (by veterinarian) of  equine herpes vaccination.  Certification must be provided to race office prior to entry.

Balmoral/Maywood security will be checking all barns for compliance (including current coggins).

NOTICE RE: Equine Herpes (EHV-1)

Please refer to the below  posted NOTICE authored by Dr. D. Fitzpatrick.

Additionally:

1.  There are now four (4) confirmed cases of EHV-1 (Other horses are being tested). 

2.        As a preventive measure, Barn 21 has been under quarantine since Saturday, April 21.

    3.   There have been no other reported cases at Balmoral.

    4.   Maywood does not appear to be involved at this time.

    5.   The Balmoral paddock is considered a “safe area”.

a.  The paddock has been thoroughly and properly disinfected.

b. The paddock stalls will be “disinfected” between uses.

     6.   Although this is an “airborne” virus, additional precautions should  be taken;

                  a.    Do not share feed among horses.

                  b.    All horses should have their own water and                   

                         feed buckets.

                  c.    Separate towels, sponges, etc.

                  d.    Good bio-security procedures should be followed

                         avoid or minimize as best possible all horse to horse

                         contact.

 

       7.   Important:  all horses should be vaccinated with a high  anti-genic dose vaccine (i.e. Pneumabort K.

          Rhinomune) every   60-90 days.

 

       8 Closely monitor horse temperature and consult with your veterinarian re any abnormality.  (Do not

              exercise, ship, or race horses with abnormal  temperatures)

       

IMPORTANT NOTICE

RE: Equine Herpes virus Type 1

 

The following is a notice from David P. Fitzpatrick DVM, Chief  State Veternarian, IRB:

 

“With the confirmation of EHV-1 positive horses at Balmoral (isolated to one barn) the following rules will be implemented to protect horses racing at Balmoral and Maywood.

 

 All Illinois horses shipping-in or stabled on the track shall have proof   of EHV-1 vaccination within 90 days.

 

 All out-of-state horses shipping to Balmoral or Maywood are required to be accompanied by a valid health certificate with the horse's  temperature recorded and proof of

 EHV-1 vaccination within 90 days.

 

All racehorses should have their temperatures monitored once or twice daily.  Race horses with temperatures should not be exercised, shipped or raced.  Trainers are advised to consult with their veterinarian if they have febrile horses and also on good bio-security procedures.  Contact the State Veterinarian’s office if you have any questions or problems."
