Iam Bonasera Returns (12/29/12)

Iam Bonasera, who established himself as the top ICF aged male pacer of 2012, is back competing Saturday night after a six-week absence.
Trainer Roger Welch quit with the 5-year-old son of Cole Muffler after the horse had some trouble in the turns in his November starts but not after Iam Bonasera turned his season around when he joined the Beecher, IL stable in the middle of July.
Iam Bonasera began this year only collecting 1 win in 5 starts and banking $14,700 on the east coast and $10,000 of that amount came in a conditioned pace triumph at The Meadowlands in early June.
Since the horse was shipped to Welch Iam Bonasera has added nearly $175,000 to his card while winning 8 of 14 starts. The hard-charging pacer thundered home to capture the $52,000 Big Tom on Aug. 4 and Super Night’s $127,000 Maurello Final against other state-breds and when he left the ICF ranks he didn’t miss a beat.
Iam Bonasera notched a trio Balmoral Invitational Paces against open company horses and also took an Invite at Indiana Downs.
“Iam Bonasera trained strong during the week and hopefully he’ll perform well in Saturday’s invite,” said Roger.
Driver Todd Warren is a big fan of Iam Bonasera.
“If you can get him around the last turn half-way straight and he’s close, he’ll usually go by those good horses,” said Warren in an earlier interview. “The horse has got such a high gear.”
Iam Bonasera will bring a four-season record of 25 wins in 56 starts and career earnings of over $620,000 for his owners John Carver (Bettendorf, Iowa) and Bert Hochsprung (Elburn, Illinois) when he leaves from the outside 8-slot in Saturday’s ninth race $17,000 feature as the 7-2 programmed second choice.
Last week’s invite winner Al’s Hammered (p.p. 7, Bobby Smolin) is the 3-1 early favorite.
The race was handicapped by groups with the first 2 slots going to Fort Silky (10-1, Casey Leonard) and Bell Valley Bill (12-1, Pat Curtin). Then it’s Firstclassallthway (5-1, Marcus Miller) and Park Lane Deputy (8-1, Sam Widger), followed by Power Of Tara N (4-1, Brian Carpenter) and Best Man Hanover (6-1, Mike Oosting) in posts 5 and 6, in that order.
Super Night champ returns in tonight's Invite after a six-week absence.
