"This Dog" Fighting Towards $1 Million (02/16/13)

Future Illinois Hall of Famer Thisbigdogwilfight is still plugging away at the age of ten for the Jim Eaton Stable and will make his second start of the year in Saturday’s eighth race conditioned pace for non-winners of $5,500 in their last five starts.
I caught up to his trainer the other day and asked Jim if he had any goals for the venerable ICF pacer.
“I sure would like to see him reach $1 million in lifetime earnings,” replied the 2011 inductee into our Hall of Fame. “The horse deserves the opportunity. He’s less than $28,000 away and he’s been good for a lot of years for us.”
One of the reasons for the longevity of Thisbigdogwilfight is the fact that he’s never been over-raced by Eaton who has always given his star pacer his proper rest.
Going into 2013 Thisbigdogwilfight has never made more than 29 starts in a year and has averaged 22 trips postward per season. The revered-timer has 55 career victories and earnings of $972,152, putting him $27,848 away from becoming the next ICF millionaire.
Reaching purse earnings of $1 million is no small task for a horse who has never won a “six figure” race. Thisbigdogwilfight’s richest victory came in the $92,000 Carey Championship at Hawthorne in 2007.
The horse holds the record for the most Super Night appearances with eight in a row and 7 of those came in Championship stakes (from 2005 through 2012).
Currently owned by Robert Silberberg of Farmington Hills, Michigan, the gelding is one of a handful of horses to have five consecutive years in a row with a sub 1:50 mark for that season, turning the tricks as a 3-year-old in 2006 through his 7-year-old campaign in 2011.
And Thisbigdogwilfight was only a few ticks from doing it again last year at the age of nine when he won in 1:50.2 last May in a Balmoral conditioned pace.
Streaks On Line: St Elmo Hero and Betterluvnexttime put their winning streaks on the line in Saturday’s co-features with regular driver Mike Oosting.
St Elmo Hero (9-5) goes after his 4th consecutive victory Invitational Pace victory in the ninth race and his 5th Invite triumph in his last six starts. Betterluvnexttime (2-1) has won the last pair of filly and mare Opens and 6 of the last 8 she’s competed in on the Crete big track.
Ex-Wilson Champ Here: Fashion Delight, a $39,000 purchase for the Nick Giberson Stable at the recent Meadowlands Sale, was the winner of the $473,000 Woodrow Wilson in 2010 and third in the Breeders Crown Final as a freshman.
Bought by Mark Winship of Canton, Illinois, the now five-year-old has $739,602 on his card also captured the $289,925 Empire Breeders Classic at Tioga Downs as a three-year-old.
A Nice Night: We had nine of our top selections win races on Friday's Maywood Park program.
