Maywood Hosts Initial Season Stake (04/12/13)

Posted Friday April 11, 2013

                                                By Mike Paradise

The Bob Phillips Stable’s Big Brad looks to make it back-to-back stakes victories when Maywood Park hosts its first ICF stake race of the season Friday night. It’s the $12,000 Sportsmaster for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings.

Big Brad led from start to finish in last Saturday’s $12,000 Taurus Bomber for driver Bobby Smolin and he’ll open as the 8-5 morning line choice to visit Maywood’s winner’s circle this time.

Phillips anticipates a solid season from the son of Henry Clay who led from start to finish when he rolled to a 1:54.3 sophomore debut in the Taurus Bomber.

“He raced really well for us last season,” said Phillips. “I have high expectations for him as a 3-year-old.”

  As well he should,

Big Brad didn’t make his first 2-year-old start until September but he still earned over $83,000 for his Streator, Illinois owners John and Mary Krasnican. The colt finished third or better in all 9 starts winning 3 of them, including a 1:51.1 mile in an October 20 stake, a Balmoral Park track record for a freshman pacer.

“Big Brad isn’t very big but he filled out over the winter and he looks like a bull,” said Phillips. “The horse didn’t race until later in the season as a 2-year-old because he had a slab fracture that we had to get healed up.

“This year he’s eligible for all the major ICF stakes this year and also a few out east as well.”

Big Brad has shown he can handle Maywood. He was third in the $55,000 Cardinal Final behind Fox Valley Action and Collete Hotspur and was also third in the $110,000 Abe Lincoln against open company freshman.

Big Brad leaves from post four in Friday’s six-horse Sportsmaster field.

To his inside are Party Cove (programmed 12-1, Mike Rogers), Silver Devil (5-1, Todd Warren) and Innocent Victim (8-1, Kyle Wilfong). On his right is the first time Lasix user Alequash Hotspur (9-2, Tim Curtin) and Shotgun Shack (5-2, Mike Oosting).

All five of Big Brad’s Sportsmaster foes have at least one victory at Maywood already this year.
