Well-Rested Invite Field (04/20/13)

Posted Saturday April 20, 2013

                                                     By Mike Paradise

After a two-week absence the circuit’s Invitational pace is back on Saturday’s Balmoral card and all three winners of the $17,000 handicaps in March will hook-up again in the ninth race headliner.

St Elmo Hero (3-1, Mike Oosting) who took the last Invite (March 30) and Thunder Steeler (Kyle Wilfong), the March 16 victor, have been off for three weeks. Fort Silky (Casey Leonard), who proved best on March 13, has had one less week off after breezing in the April 6 Song Cycle ICF stake.

Time To Roll (6-1, Dave Magee) is also making his first April start.

Special Joe (6-1, John Roberts), Heath (8-1, Todd Warren), Power Of Tara N (7-2, Brian Carpenter) and Lennox Blue Chip (10-1, Josh Sutton) complete the Invite handicapped by groups (1-5), (6), (7-8).

It should be interesting to see if how much, if any, St Elmo Hero, Thunder Steeler and Time To Roll, are affected by their three-weeks off. It should be pointed out that Thunder Steeler did compete in five consecutive Saturdays heading into the month of April.

Sutton’s Finale: Saturday is the last night of driving on the Chicago circuit for Josh Sutton. He’ll leave Sunday to begin competing in Ohio.

The Kentucky native, who turns 31 this upcoming Tuesday, departs as third leading driver this season in combined wins at Balmoral and Maywood, trailing only Mike Oosting and Casey Leonard

Ready for Action: Trainer Roger Welch is looking to qualify last season’s Illinois Colt Pacer of the Year Fox Valley Action, possibility as soon as next week.

“Fox Valley Action trained in 2:01 two weeks ago and 2:02 last week so he’s close to qualifying,” said Welch. “I’m shooting to have him ready for Wednesday’s (April 24) qualifiers.

“Then I hope to get him a few starts over at Maywood Park before their ($100,000) Maywood Pace on June 21.”

Eliminations for that 3-year-old ICF colt stake are a week earlier on Friday, June 14.

A Sensible Move: Next Sunday’s April 28 scheduled Betzotic stake for ICF pacing fillies was wisely been moved back to Saturday May 4 by the Balmoral Racing Office.

Maywood Park hosts the Desperate Lady, also for ICF filly pacers, this upcoming Thursday, April 25 only three nights before the original placing of Balmoral’s Betzotic on the circuit’s stakes schedule.

Getting It Done: John De Long drove four winners on Friday’s Maywood program that included the longshots Atomic Art ($12.40) in the second and Allamerican Bomber ($15.80) in the sixth. He also brought home Master Jeeves ($8.80) in race eight and Yankee Doodle Jim ($4.00) in the tenth.
