ICF Sophomore Fillies Shift at Maywood (04/25/13)

Posted Thursday April 25, 2013

                                                 By Mike Paradise

The $12,000 Desperate Lady, Maywood Park’s initial ICF stake of the year for 3-year-old pacing fillies was originally scheduled for Thursday night but was moved to Friday’s card where it will share top billing with the $12,000 Taser Gun for state-bred sophomore colts.

The seven-horse Desperate Lady has seven fillies going postward in the fifth race co-feature with six-betting interests with the coupling of the Sawgrass Farms sophomores Thank You Doc (Dean Magee) and Our Miss Kristi (Mike Oosting) as the 9-5 morning line favorities..

The 2-1 programmed second choice is Bob Phillips Big Zipper (Bobby Smolin) who captured Balmoral’s Direct Balance stake earlier this month and has been terrific on Maywood’s half-mile oval.

Big Zipper (p.p. 5) has made six lifetime starts at Maywood and has nailed own five victories. Her only loss on the half-miler was a second place finish on March 31 against mostly older horses.

The daughter of the Big Green Machine led at every pole in her Direct Balance win, impressing Phillips, her owner and trainer.

“Big Zipper raced better than I thought she would on the front-end with that strong headwind coming down the stretch,” said Phillips. She’s won 4 or 5 races winning that way but I think she’s even better coming out of a hole.”

The filly was raced from behind last week in an open 3-year-old race at Balmoral and showed a strong move when she was second best behind Pertty Music.

In 11 starts as a 3-year-old Big Zipper has never finished worse than third, winning 5 times to go along with 4 seconds.

Thank You Doc (p.p. 3) won Maywood’s My Metallic stake in her second career start and was third in the Violet Final on the half-miler later in her freshman year. In between she captured the $189,000 Orange and Blue Filly Final last Super Night.

Post 1 and 2 belong to Bust My Chops (15-1, John De Long) and Zumba (12-1, Casey Leonard), in that order while Lizzabelle (8-1, Dale Hiteman) and Incredible Filly (4-1, Dave Magee) leave from the 6 and 7 slots, respectively.
