Rematch in Taser Gun Stake (04/26/13)

Posted Friday April 26, 2013

                                                By Mike Paradise

Friday’s $12,000 Taser Gun is a rematch from two weeks ago of Maywood Park’s Sportsmaster when Sawgrass Farms Shotgun Shack overtook the heavy 1-2 favorite Big Brad in the first stake of 2013 for ICF sophomore pacing colts on the circuit’s half-miler.

The Bob Phillips trained Big Brad went into the Sportsmaster off an easy triumph in Balmoral’s Taurus Bomber and over $89,000 on his card while Shotgun Shack hadn’t won a race over non-winners of two with just a little over $17,000 in career earnings.

I talked to driver Mike Oosting after Shotgun Shack’s Sportsmaster victory where the Nelson Willis trainee raced outside of the pacesetting Big Brad most of the last half of a winning 1:56 mile and still proved best by almost three lengths.

“Shotgun Shack raced good tonight (April 12) and he raced huge the week before against Wilfong’s horse (Some Heart Throb) who raced in 54,” said Oosting, adding, “Nelson (trainer Willis) has done a good job with the horse and he had him ready for this stake.”

Shotgun Shack did some growing up mentally over the winter according to Oosting.

“Last year it seemed like this horse didn’t want to always try but this year he’s had a different attitude,” said Mike,

“The horse has always had some speed but last year he got a little bullish at the end of his mile. When I drove him last week (April 5) he didn’t do that at all. He just kept going but he ran into a buzz saw in Wilfong’s horse. And tonight he also kept going. That’s a pretty good mile (1:56) with the cold and wind.”

The 8-5 program favorite Shotgun Shack will likely have to come off the pace again with the five-slot in the eighth race six-horse field while Big Brad (5-2, Bobby Smolin)leaves from the four with revenge on his mind.

Leaving from the first three slots are Kostas Wine (12-1, Dave Magee), Crankin’ It Up (6-1, Kyle Wilfong) and Middle Aged Crazy (8-1, Casey Leonard), in that order. The Nick Giberson Stable’s Silver Devil (7-2, Todd Warren) has the outside eight slot.

The $12,000 co-featured Desperate Lady for the ICF gals is three races earlier. The fifth race line-ups with Bust By Chops (John De Long), Zumba (Casey Leonard), Thank You doc (Dean Magee), Our Miss Kristi (Mike Oosting), Big Zipper (Bobby Smolin), Lizzabelle (Dale Hiteman) and Incredible Filly (Dave Magee).

Thank You Doc and Our Miss Kristi are a Sawgrass Farms owned entry and the 9-5 morning line favorites.

Oosting bagged five winners on Thursday’s 12-race Maywood card.
