Powerful Poe Favored in Sophomore Bow (April 30, 2013)

Wednesday night’s $12,000 Iggy Magoo stakes has brought out the Dirk Simpson trained star trotter Powerful Poe for his 3-year-old debut.

The 2012 Illinois Two-Year-Old Colt Trotter of the Year will bring a five-race winning streak into the $12,000 third race feature at Balmoral Park when he takes on eight ICF rivals.

Powerful Poe hasn’t gone postward since his November 7 victory in a $12,700 Betzotic stake which followed consecutive wins in the $43,500 Cardinal, the $59,100 Hanover and the $119,000 Lincoln Land Final and its elimination, all on the Crete, IL big track.

The youngster also earlier captured both the Springfield and Du Quoin State Fair championships.

Powerful Poe came on with a rush for regular driver Todd Warren to win his Balmoral Park qualifier two weeks ago in 1:58.4, overtaking stable-mate Trot Fudge Sundae by a neck with a quick :27.4 last panel.

“His qualifier went just as we hoped it would,” said his Illinois Hall of Fame trainer Simpson. “Todd did a good job with him in it just like he did last year with the colt. He didn’t rush him, took it out (of third) going into the last turn, and gave him chance to roll past like he could.

“Poe got a little bigger and stronger over the winter and he trained down very well,” added Simpson.

“He’s staked again to all the Illinois bred races and also to the American National and Hanover.”

Powerful Poe (p.p. 7) is coupled in the Iggy Magoo with King Mufasa (p.p.8, Mike Oosting). Both are co-owned by Mystical Marker Farms of Dwyer, Indiana and open as the 3-1 morning line favorites..

The Nick Giberson Stable’s Fox Valley Camo (Jamaica Patton), winner of the April 17 Speedy Rodney ICF stake, opens at 5-1 odds from post 3.

Powerful Yield (4-1, John Roberts) and Powerful Valor (9-2, Jared Finn) have the 1 and 2-slots, in that order. Fox Valley Dubai (10-1, Dave Magee), Happy Balance (12-1, Lavern Hostetler), Powerful Commander (6-1, Dean Magee) and Bands Zephyr (10-1, Casey Leonard) are the other the Iggy Magoo hopefuls.
