Eight Challenge Trot Fudge Sundae (05/05/13)

Posted Sunday May 5, 2013

                                                      By Mike Paradise

It was only one race but last season’s top ICF freshman filly trotter Trot Fudge Sundae was mighty impressive winning her initial 3-year-old start a week ago.

The Dirk Simpson trained filly drew off by more than six lengths in the Koochie stake, trotted a career best 1:56.4 mile, and had more left in the tank.

Trot Fudge Sundae had her National Hall of Fame driver Dave Magee liking what he saw from the daughter of American Native and having to feel good about her chances in tonight’s $12,000 Betzotic against eight state-bred rivals.

“I was really happy the way she raced,” said Magee. “Trot Fudge Sundae qualified a good mile but she I was a little concerned because she was aggressive. However Dirk made a few changes before her first race and she handled really nicely last Sunday.

“Since it was her first race of the season I didn’t know how much trot she would have coming out of the turn but when she saw a horse come-up she really turned-up a notch and charged away from them. Then she relaxed again.

“The filly had plenty left at the end of that mile,” added the veteran Green Bay, Wisconsin native.

Trot Fudge Sundae will bring a gaudy record of 11 wins and 2 seconds in 14 career starts into Sunday’s stake and bankroll of almost $190,000 for Illinois owners Jim Bafia (Minooka), Sam Daddono (Grant Park) and Gene Smith (Chicago), a trio of commodity traders.

Trot Fudge Sundae leaves from post four as the 8-5 first flash favorite. There is no Show wagering offered on the race.

Making her sophomore debut season debut is Robert Taylor’s Little Ms Chrissy (3-1, p.p. 9) who ended Trot Fudge Sundae’s winning streak last year in the $118,000 Lady Lincoln Land. The filly was first or second in 10 of 11 freshman starts and banked almost $130,000.

Just for Fun will (Casey Leonard) also make her initial start of the year and is coupled with Little Ms Chrissy (Robert Taylor).

Fox Valley Roxy (6-1, Mike Oosting), Bands Dee Dee (12-1, John De Long), American Express (10-1, Homer Hochstetler), High Stepper (12-1, J D Finn), Powerful Goddess (8-1, Mike Cox) and Sara The Spy (9-2) are the other Betzotic hopefuls.

Sara The Spy, winner of the Trotting Tilly stake on April 14 and runner-up a week ago in The Koochie, will debut for driver Todd Warren who recently purchased the filly who will race on Lasix for the first time. Michael Groucher is Sara The Spy’s new trainer.
