King Mufasa Becoming a Force (06/11/13)

Posted Tuesday June 11, 2013

                                                   By Mike Paradise

While King Mufasa won only 2 of 8 starts as a freshman and banked just $9,360, this year he’s 3-for-3 in the ICF 3-year-old colt and gelding trotting division, including an easy victory in the $50,800 Cardinal on May 29.

Since he joined the Mike Brink Stable the high-flying state-bred trotter also has made over $39,000 already in his second season.

“Last year as a 2-year-old King Mufasa was out of control. This year he’s not,” said his driver Mike Oosting. “Mike (trainer Brink) has done a real nice job with him, making my task out there on the racetrack a lot easier.

“The horse is a lot calmer out there. His confidence level right now is real high and that’s a big thing. Every week he’s drives the same. He doesn’t seem to get tired and he’s got a big kick on the end of the mile.”

With major ICF stakes like the Su Mac Lad on Super Night and next month’s Kadabra still ahead and with big open events like the American National and the Hanover still on the horizon, King Mufasa’s bankroll should swell in 2013.

“If King Mufasa stays sound he’s going to be a nice trotter and a force to be reckoned with,” added Oosting.

Since King Mufasa and last year’s division champion Powerful Poe sharing common-ownership among the five horses entered, Wednesday’s $12,000 Southern Rocketop stake for ICF 3-year-old trotting males was relegated to an early non-wagering event with a 6:45 pm post time.

The other ICF stake Wednesday will be part of the regular 10-race wagering card. It’s the $6,000 Misty Misty for freshman pacing fillies.

All six ICF fillies are making their pari-mutuel debut and three of them—Sky Candy, Smashing Samantha and Linda On My Mind—all gaining some experience with a non-betting affair a week ago in Springfield.

The other three Misty Misty starters are Green Valey, Sara Pearl and Perfectly Clear.

The Chris Choros homebred Green Valley (Bobby Smolin), has three siblings who have competed this year—State Street Liz (1:54.3), Yermanos (1:53.4) and Remissionofsins (1:52.2). They’re all out of his broodmare Pleasepassthejelly.

Green Valey leaves from post 3 for trainer Bob Phillips at opening odds of 5-2 in race two with Linda On My Mind (Mike Oosting) next at 3-1.
