Maywood Hosts Its Initial Freshman Stake of Season (06/27/13)

Posted Thursday June 27, 2013

                                                 By Mike Paradise

Thursday evening’s $12,000 Juxtaposition, the first ICF 2-year-old stake of the season at Maywood Park, brought out nine freshman fillies with recent stakes winner Linda On My Mind the 9-5 first flash favorite.

Mike Oosting will be back at the lines of Linda On My Mind, who coasted to a 1:56.1 victory in her pari-mutuel debut eight days ago in Balmoral’s Incredible Tillie for trainer Randy Crisler and owner James Collier, both of Mississippi.

The daughter of Henry Clay took advantage of the one-slot in the Incredible Tillie and will likely do the same when she also leaves from the pole position in Thursday’s sixth race headliner.

Linda On My Mind was bought for only $3,500 at last year’s Illini Classic Sale and has almost made twice that much going into tonight’s Juxtaposition.

I asked her driver Mike Oosting his thoughts about the filly after her easy Incredible Tillie triumph.

“She was a little grabby behind the gate in her first start,” said Mike. “I would have liked to settle in with her since I had the rail and be able to pick my spot but I really couldn’t. However she never tired on the front-end and was strong through the wire. She came home pretty good into a pretty good headwind that night.

“Her people certainly have her ready for these early two-year-old stakes”.

Linda On My Mind paced a :56.1 last half when she held off Green Valey on one and 1/4 lengths. Green Valey (Bobby Smolin) will open as the 7-2 second choice from post 4 in the nine-horse Juxtaposition field.

The 9-2 early third choice is Life On The Row (Ronnie Gillespie) who raced first up in the Incredible Tillie when she was third best. The filly drew the 7-slot for tonight’s stake.

Four fillies—April May Dune (6-1, Brian Carpenter), Mae Flynn (30-1, Dean Magee), My Little Bit (12-1, Casey Leonard) and Western Dame (15-1, Dale Hiteman)—are making their racing debuts in the Juxtaposition.

April May Dune was a $10,000 yearling buy and has five siblings with over $100,000 in money earned, including a 1:49.2 half-brother. Mae Flynn is a Blackfoot Farms homebred. My Little Bit went for $11,000 when her name was Fox Valley Parade while Western Dame, a $14,000 yearling purchase, is a full sister to Hostess Lisa (1:51.3).

Perfectly Clear (15-1, Kyle Wilfong) and Smashing Samantha (10-1, Pat Curtin) will complete the ICF freshman filly stake field.

The $12,000 Enzo The Baker for ICF freshman pacing colts will be Friday’s Maywood Park headliner.

Linda On My Mind (Mike Oosting) is Thursday's Juxtaposition favorite.
