April May Dune Won't Be Overlooked Again (07/04/13)

Posted Thursday July 4, 2013

                                                 By Mike Paradise

The Mike Brink Stable’s April May Dune won’t be going off at double-digit odds again in Thursday’s $12,000 My Metallic stake for ICF freshman pacing fillies. Not after she was an easy winner at 13-1 odds in last week’s Juxtaposition stake when she made her very first start.

The Duneside Perch filly was more than three lengths the best even though she raced on the outside of the 1-9 heavy favorite Linda On My Mind for more than half of the mile.

“She won pretty easy,” said last week’s driver Brian Carpenter. “Going into the race neither I nor most everybody else didn’t know what to expect. As it turned out, she won’t be sneaking up on anybody in this Thursday’s race after that strong effort.”

April May Dune is out of a successfully broodmare April Ruffles who has had 9 of her 12 foals make it to the races, often with good success. Her first, Ruffed Up, had a mark of 1:49.2 and over $650,000 in career earnings.

April May Dune has two half-brothers currently racing, Western Deal (1:53.3), a 10-time season winner for Angie Affrunti in $12,000 claimers at Hoosier, and Ruff Me Up (1:51.1) who is competing in Canada.

A roan filly, April May Dune appeared to have a little trouble in the third turn but Brian got her straighten-out and she was flawless after that.

“I think she over-paced a little bit so I took a hold of her,” said the Indiana native. “I thought Mike’s horse (Linda On My Mind) was tiring so I let my filly go after him on the backside. I touched her on the tail once and she took off and cleared pretty easy.

“The inside of the track was a little deep because of the earlier rain and they only got down to the half in :59.3, so her time of 1:58 flat was pretty handy mile I had a nice good hold of her in the lane or she could have gone faster. The filly had plenty left at the finish.”

April May Dune, a $10,000 yearling buy at the 2012 Illini Class Sale for owners Ed Teefy and trainer Mike Brink, opens as the 8-5 early favorite from post six with Dave Magee taking over her lines.

Party Hangover Two (p.p. 2, John De Long) is at 5-2 and Ineverkissandtell (p.p., Ronnie Gillespie) is next at 9-2. Western Dame (8-1, Casey Leonard), Mae Flynn (15-1, Gary Rath), Just A Minute (12-1, Brian Carpenter), Perfectly Clear (8-1, Kyle Wilfong) and Smashing Samantha (30-1, Pat Curtin) round out the My Metallic field.

April May Dune (Brian Carpenter) rasily won her Juxtaposition debut.
