Streaking Celebrity Hercules Returns (07/09/13)

Posted Tuesday July 9, 2013

                                                   By Mike Paradise

The “Winner’s Over” trot is back on Balmoral Park’s mid-week card Wednesday night after a week’s absence and it coincides with the return of the Dandy Farms trotter Celebrity Hercules who has been rock-solid on the Crete one-miler.

Celebrity Hercules will carry a four-race winning streak into the sixth race feature, all with John De Long at his lines. The 6-year-old gelding spent June up in Minnesota where he made quick work of a pair of Open Handicap fields at when he breezed in both at Running Aces Park.

Those races followed a pair of rather easy triumphs in ”Winner’s Over” at Balmoral where Celebrity Hercules sports a sparkling record for 7 wins, 3 seconds and 1 third in 11 outings.

Bought for $24,000 at the mid-January Meadowlands Sale by his Glenview owners, Celebrity Hercules has already earned his purchase price back and almost $50,000 more racing here in the Midwest this year.

Celebrity Best, the 2-1 morning line favorite, figures to get a stern test from the Homer Hochstetler Stable’s Big Chocolate (5-2). The now 4-year-old trotter was an easy 1:54.1 front-winner winner two weeks ago from the rail when Dave Magee took over the driving chores for the first time.

Dave is back to guide the Richard Keys owned trotter but this time he’ll have to leave from the outside seven-slot with Celebrity Hercules on his left. The first five posts are manned by Fox Valley Arrow (6-1, Casey Leonard), GRC Travel King (8-1, Bobby Smolin), Mad Cow Lisa (6-1, Marshall Makin), Outlaw (8-1, Merv Chupp) and Clever Upstart (9-2, John Roberts).

This will be the local debut for the five-year-old Outlaw, a recent purchase by the Chupp Racing Stable. Outlaw spent most of this season at The Meadowlands where he had a winning 1:55.1 mile in March. In 2012 the trotter picked up two wins at Pocono and two others at Dover Downs.

Outlaw was a very well-regarded youngster. The son of Muscles Yankee sold for $120,000 at the 2008 Harrisburg Sale. His dam’s first foal went for $165,000 in a sale and her two foals after Outlaw brought $110,000 and $290,000 as yearlings.

Outlaw was unraced as both a two and three-year-old.

Also on the Wednesday’s card is the $10,000 Physic Spirit stake, the first of the local season for ICF 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings.

The fourth race stake has a full-field of 10 freshman: Gray N Cloudy (3-1), Big Bad Bob (5-1), JJ’s Revenge (6-1), Cardinal Wind (10-1), Gottaluvredhead (10-1), Powerful Wall (6-1), the 9-2 Herman Wheeler owned entry of Fox Valley Metro with Bobby B Breeze and the 4-1 Mike Brink owned entry of Just Leo and Tour Hall.

1,000 in Sight: Casey Leonard is zeroing-in on 1,000 career driving winners. The 35-year-old Harvard native goes into Wednesday’s Balmoral program with 985, only 15 away.
