                                         Looking Back

                                        Keystone Accent

Owned by Mary and Robert Leiter of Battle Creek, Michigan, Keystone Accent was one of the premier Free For All pacers in the late 1970s for driver and trainer Frank O’Mara.

The son of Bye Bye Byrd is shown in the above picture drawing off to an easy two length victory in the $20,000 Easy Prom Free For All Pace on opening night of the 1976 season at Sportsman’s Park.

The May 31 Monday evening crowd of 14,421 saw Keystone Accent motor to a 1:58.1 mile, beating Shadyside Trixie and the favorite Rambling Willie.

Five nights later on the following Saturday Keystone Accent captured the $30,000 Fort Dearborn Free For All Pace in 1:57 flat, the fourth fastest mile recorded in 1976 on the five-eighths Cicero, IL track. In that race The Michigan-bred winner defeated such national stars as Young Quinn, Handle With Care and Nero.

Keystone Accent would finish his 4-year-old season in 1976 with 15 victories and earnings of just under $130,000, a very nice figure when you consider the horse was bought at the Harrisburg Sale for only $12,000.

The fastest race paced in 1976 at Sportsman’s was Shirley’s Beau’s 1:55.1 mile in the second division of the U.S. Pacing Championship. Keystone Accent appeared to have the first division wrapped up but went off stride on the lead mid-way down the stretch enabling Rambling Willie to triumph in 1:57.1.

Sportsman’s Park leading driver that season was Daryl Busse with 85 dash winners, followed by Walter Paisley (82), Stan Banks (67), and Jim Curran and Joe Marsh Jr. with 56 each.
