Looking Back to Sportsfancy
A $10,000 buy as a yearling at the 2005 Cottonwood Farm Sale she turned out to be “a steal” for the Homer Hochstetler Stable and eventually also a lucrative purchase the Baron Racing Stable of Pennsylvania.
Sportsfancy, a daughter of Sportsmaster and the first foal of the Life Sign mare Finish Firstfancy, ended her racing career in 2011 with 48 lifetime victories and as an Illinois bred millionaire with $1,001,957 on her card.
Sportsfancy banked almost $125,000 in her freshman 2006 season for Hochstetler and she did it without racing at Springfield, Du Quoin or on Super Night.
The filly captured the $63,700 at Maywood, Balmoral’s $50,000 Sara Myers, a $26,000 ISOBA and her $22,800 American National elimination before ending the season second in the American National Final to Cabana Fever.
Sportsfancy became the queen of the Illinois bred pacers as a 3-year-old when she captured 15 races in 2007 and pulled down purse earnings of $359,280, all but $78,960 for the Hochstetler Stable.
She was sold prior to her start in Maywood’s $75,000 Cinderella which she won for the John Butenschoen Stable,
Ryan Anderson was a regular driver those first two years and he guided her to six consecutive triumphs early in that 2007 season which included the $48,000 Violet Final, the $100,000 Maywood Filly Pace and a $26,800 division of a Hanover,
The filly went to Hawthorne that summer and swept its Determination Plus Series, including the $59,000 Final. Sportsfancy then came back to Balmoral and won her Grandma Ann elimination and that $174,000 Super Night Final.
Sportsfancy raced at east coast tracks from 2008 through 2011, often against the top distaffers at race tracks like The Meadowlands, Yonkers, Chester, Dover and Harrington, taking her lifetime mark of 1:49.2 as a 5-year-old at The Big M.
