Final Hanover's Solidify Saturday's Card (08/02/13)

Posted Friday August 2, 2013

                                                By Mike Paradise

The last of the Hanover stakes for this season, both for 2-year-old pacers, punctuates tomorrow night’s solid Saturday’s card at Balmoral Park.

The filly event had 15 horses entered, making it necessary for two divisions, each worth $29,900 while the  colt stake had 12 pacers pass the entry box, so there will be one $46,100 division with 10 across and two trainers, making for an intriguing affair.

Three freshman—Big Turn On (15-1, Brian Carpenter, p.p. 5), Western Fella (5-1, John De Long, p.p. 10), and Major Starlight (8-1, Dale Hiteman, p.p.11), have shipped in from Canada to take on nine local horses in the sixth race headliner.

The early favoritism went to last weekend’s Loyal Opposition victor PQ Three (Mike Oosting) who is listed at 7-2 after rattling off the consecutive victories for the Erv Miller Stable who also starts Badger Quinn (8-1, Le Wayne Miller) with the two-slot. They’ll race un-coupled.

The Todd La Fountain Stable’s Blooming Genius (Dave Magee) is the 9-2 second choice with the pole position.

The other Hanover colt hopefuls are Fox Valley Cupid (20-1), Sweet Competition (10-1), Theindecentlawyer (6-1), Cotton Eyed Joe (10-1), Traffic Cop (6-1) and Wimpy Doodle (20-1), stuck with post 12 in the second tier.

Boxed Chocolates (5-2, Dave Magee) and Ideal Helen (2-1, Le Wayne Miller), a pair of Meadowlands invaders are the first-flash favorites in their respective filly divisions. We’ll talk more about the filly Hanover’s in Saturday’s column.

Nine horses accepted a chance to race in the circuit’s $17,000 Invitational ninth race, which was drawn by groups. The outside 6, 7, 8 and 9 slots went to Fox Valley Yukon (8-1, Kyle Wilfong), Fort Silky (9-2, Casey Leonard), the programmed favorite Best Man Hanover (3-1, Mike Oosting) and last week’s winner St Elmo Hero (7-2, Dave Magee) who got away at odds of 4-1 when he proved best in 1:50.3.

The longshot hopes of the Invite are Tink And Tiger (3-1, Dean Magee), coupled with Best Man Hanover, Uncle Bud (10-1, John De Long), Whirlwindiplomacy (10-1, Casey Leonard), Major Monet (8-1, Dale Hiteman) and Lennox Blue Chip (6-1, Kyle Husted) with posts 1 through 5, in that order.

The Invite will be preceded by the $12,500 “Winner’s Over” for fillies and mares, also with a nine-horse field. Distaffers who are non-winners of $15,000 in their last five starts drew the inside.

The outside horses—Mystical Victress (3-1, Mike Oosting), Just By Design (5-1, Dave Magee) and Party Hangover (4-1, Kyle Husted) are the morning line choices with posts 7, 8 and 9, in that order.
