Eight Springfield Titles on the Line (08/15/13)

Posted Thursday August 15, 2013

                                                 By Mike Paradise

Harness racing at Springfield winds up today when eight $45,000 Illinois State Fair Colt Stakes Championships will be decided.

While trainer Roger Welch sends out the 3-1 morning line favorites in both the 2-year-old trotting events with S V Spirit in the seventh race filly final and Bobby B Breeze in the ninth race colt division, the Balmoral Park based conditioner didn’t have either youngster in his barn when the freshman season began.

His owners William and Pat De Long purchased S V Spirit a few days after she won Balmoral’s Star Slinger Stake on June 19 in 2:02.3. The daughter of Physic Spirit has gone on since to rattle off three consecutive wins with Todd Warren, including a comfortable 1 and 1/4 length victory in her State Fair elimination last week.

“S V Spirit is just a sweetheart,” said Welch. “She wasn’t eligible to the Fox Valley Flan stake at the end of July so I sent her to the Lincoln Fair track to stay sharp and she won the Downstate Classic there pretty easily. It was her first start ever on a half-mile track.”

Bobby B Breeze didn’t arrive to the Welch Stable until a month later after a second place finish in the July 10 Physic Spirit stake for the Herman Wheeler Stable. He was bought by the De Long’s, along with Chicagoan Rocky Ruffalo and Gordon Wright of Michigan.

“We bought Bobby B Breeze privately a few weeks ago,” said Ruffalo in the Springfield winner’s circle last week. “We watched him a race a couple of times. We liked what we saw and decided to take a chance on him.”

Bobby B Breeze made his debut for the Welch Stable on July 31 and finished almost seven lengths ahead of the field in Balmoral Park’s $50,000 Plesac Final for freshman ICF trotting colts.

“I was very, very happy with that performance,” said Welch. “He dominated the field and he won it under wraps.”

The Southwind Breeze colt has put $29,000 on his first season card in two starts for the Welch Stable with $25,000 coming in the Plesac and $4,000 more with his nearly two length victory in his State Fair elimination.

The Robert Taylor owned entry of Little Ms Chrissy (Taylor) and Just For Fun (Casey Leonard) open as the (program odds) 2-1 favorites in the fourth race championship for ICF 3-year-old trotting fillies.

The powerful three-horse entry of King Mufasa (Mike Oosting), Skyline Road (Marcus Miller) and Powerful Poe (Todd Warren) are listed at even money in the sophomore colt final where there is only Win and Exacta wagering. The Mike Brink Stable’s King Mufasa is gunning for his seventh in a row.

The eighth race championship for 3-year-old pacing fillies has First Lady’s Z Tam (3-1, Leonard) and My Little Bit (4-1, Miller) as the early favorites which could make Thesleazyprincess (Oosting) at 6-1 and Western Dame (John De Long) at 8-1 a pair of threats at inviting prices.

The draw for posts wasn’t kind to the 2-year-old pacing filly favorites Auniqueaquisition (3-1, Mike Oosting) and Feel like Dancing (4-1, Kyle Wilfong) who both do their best racing up-close. They landed the 9 and posts, respectively.

A likely brisk first half mile could set things up for late rushers like Mystical Danica (6-1, Marcus Miller), Aliyah Maria (8-1, Todd Warren) or Dallas Jones (12-1, Leonard).

The 11th race final for ICF 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings is small on size with eight starters but big on talent. It’ll line up thusly: Fancy Creek Elusiv (6-1, Dave Magee), Monoploy Man (5-1, De Long), Crankin’ It Up (4-1, Kyle Wilfong), Mr Three Quarters (15-1, Marcus Turner), Sage Ruck (8-1, Oosting), Fox Valley Action (12-1, Warren), Mystical Walter (3-1, Leonard) and Ready (12-1, Dean Magee).

Unbeaten Unlocked (Dave Magee) goes after his seventh career victory in the 12th race, the last championship of the Springfield meet. The Nick Prather trained colt will open at 2-1 in the freshman pacing colt final from post 7 in the field of 10.

His challengers are Fox Valley Deuce (10-1, Dale Hiteman), Fox Valley Van (12-1, De Long), Fox Valley Cupid (12-1, Ronnie Gillespie), PQ Three (4-1, Oosting), Fancy Creek Mitch (15-1, Dean Magee), Badger Quinn (5-1, Miller), Traffic Cop (6-1, Warren) and Rio’s Z Tam (8-1, Leonard).

Happy Ending: Mike Price Shots went 2-for-2 Wednesday at Balmoral with Seekin For Glamour at $8.40 and Always A Cheater at $17.40 winning the last two races.
