  Looking Back to Chief Counsel

Back in the late 1930s Chief Counsel was one of the best known pacers in the country when he was conditioned and driven by the late Hugh “Doc’ Marshall.

As a 3-year-old in 1938 “The Chief” recorded a 1:57 and ¾ mile, a world record for a 3-year-old pacer. He started 22 races that year and won 18 of them and was second in the other four.

His greatest race may have come that season at Springfield. After winning the first heat of the Review Futurity in 2:01 and ¼, he paced into a strong wind in the homestretch and still zipped home in 1:58 1.4 for the second fastest second heat ever paced, regardless of age and only ¼ of a second off Billy Direct’s mark for a 3-year-old set the previous year.

As a 2-year-old Chief Counsel’s mark of 2:03 was also paced at Springfield. It was 1 and ¾ seconds faster than any other juvenile pacer of the 1937 season.

The Volomite colt’s trainer and driver “Doc” Parshall won the Hambletonian in 1934 and Lord Jim and in 1939 with Peter Astra.

Parshall dominated Springfield’s Review for a 10-year span seven decades ago, winning the race in 1931, 1935, and from 1938 through 1941. The richest Review purse Parshall won was $2,150 with Lady Vonian in 1931.

Price Is Right: Mike’s Price Shots hit on the $20 winner Cruel Girl in Wednesday’s third race at Balmoral Park. The Exacta, with the even-money favorite finishing second, paid $64.40.
