Mt. Sterling Fair Lures Al’s Hammered (08/03/14)

While Balmoral Park boasts a triple feature of three trotting stakes races on tonight’s program it won’t have the Illinois harness racing limelight all to itself Sunday. That’s because some 250-plus miles away the Brown County Fair at Mt. Sterling lured the state’s No. 1 pacer to its fairgrounds.
Bob Phillips Al’s Hammered will put his six race winning streak on the line this afternoon in the $21,500 Taser Gun for ICF pacers ages four and up. Regular driver Bobby Smolin will make the four-plus hour drive to Mt. Sterling to handle Al’s Hammered in the richest and most anticipated harness race on the County Fair Circuit.
“I’ve got to race him somewhere so I decided to send him to Mt. Sterling for that $21,000 pot,” said his owner and trainer Bob Phillips. “Balmoral’s Invite hasn’t been filling so he hasn’t raced in a couple of few weeks.
“I’ll take him to Springfield next,” continued Phillips “The horse has won in 1:52 at Maywood so I don’t see much of a problem with him doing well on Mr. Sterling’s (half-mile) fair track.”
Al’s Hammered, the winner of 9 of his last 10 starts against the best pacers on the Chicago circuit, is listed at low-end odds of 2-5 when he takes on some tough and familiar foes in the Taser Gun, including the defending stakes champion Big Daddy Woo Woo (Nick Prather).
Elkhorn Damien (Jamaica Patton), No Respect (Nick Giberson) , Silver Devil (Sam Widger) and Ricky Bobbie (Tom Simmons) round out the field of Illinois-bred pacers that has a 3:48 pm scheduled post time. First race at the Mt. Sterling program, the only Illinois County Fair that offers pari-mutuel wagering on its harness races is at 2 pm.
Hanover stake trots for 2-year-olds are on tap at Balmoral, along with the $25,000 Mike’s A Mystery ages three and up and John De Long will drive the early favorite in each stake.
Fox Valley Flan bridesmaid Fox Valley Yoko (De Long) is the heavy 7-5 favorite to put away five foes in the second race $29,500 Hanover for freshman fillies. The Curt Grummel landed the one-post and looks hard to beat.
Powerfulebbrowning (10-1, Lewayne Miller), P T Kaye (8-1, Marshall Makin), Sloane Elise (3-1, Dave Magee), Rouse Run Quiana (8-1, Larry Lee Smith) and Lima Pizaz (0-2, Travis Seekman) are the challengers.
Dirk Simpson’s Southerncomfortzone, also driven by De Long, opens as the 5-2 first flash fourth race choice in the $26,900 Hanover for first season trotting colts and geldings.
He’ll take on Powerful Above All (8-1, Casey Leonard), Air Force Blue (8-1, Mike Cox), Broadway Emotion (6-1, Mike Brink), Cruisin Valor (7-2, Brian Carpenter), Bulldog Benji (9-2, Dave Magee) and Gabe Three Chins (12-1, Jared Seekman).
Fox Valley Veto, the 3-year-old brother of Fox Valley Yoko, carries a three-race winning streak into the Mikes A Mystery for De Long and the Curt Grummel Stable. Drawing the one-slot puts the gelding into the position to be the 3-1 programmed choice.
The competitive field awaiting “Veto” includes Ants Iner Pants (4-1, Dean Magee), Powerful Poe (9-2, Dave Magee), Cardinal Wind (8-1, Dale Hiteman), Little Ms Chrissy (6-1), Mack’s Gold Band (8-1, Lewayne Miller), Vaporstar (6-1, Ryan Anderson) and Photo Surprise (12-1, Casey Leonard).
Springfield Next: Entries for the first draw for the Illinois State Fair at Springfield will be taken Tuesday (August 5) morning at the Maywood Park Race Office. Deadline to enter is 10 am for the upcoming Friday and Saturdays cards with their 2 and 3-year-old stake events and possible eliminations.
