A Look Back to Dirty Deeds (06/11/10)Posted Friday, June 11, 2010 By Mike Paradise This is another in a new weekly feature exclusively on www.harnessillinois.com. Every week I’ll post a least one “Looking Back feature. Mostly they’ll be of the great horses who have competed in our state through the years. At times they’ll be pictures from the winner’s circle, special celebrations, and in some cases old memorable race track scenes. Some of these photos haven’t been printed or posted in decades . . . others have never been printed at all.
Looking Back DIRTY DEEDS One of the popular and consistent horses on the Chicago circuit in the late 1980s and early 1990s was this Illinois bred pacer shown here winning at Maywood Park in 1988 with his season best time of 1:56.2 with his regular driver Dale Hiteman. Dirty Deeds was a son of Egyptian Dancer bred by Larry Marsh. In a career than spanned from 1986 through 1992 Dirty Deeds captured 45 races in 167 career starts a 27 per cent winning percentage and finished third or better 65 per cent of the time. And many of those starts came in the Free For All and Invitational ranks at Sportsman’s, Maywood and Hawthorne. Dirty Deeds spent his early yearling years racing for owners Merrie R. Gurrola (Hinsdale, IL) and Richard J. Gurrola (La Porte, IN). He took his career mark of 1:54 flat at Sportsman’s Park in 1991 at the age of seven and as a six-year-old rattled off 13 victories. The gelding retired after the 1992 season with lifetime earnings of $468,906. To view Archived Notes and Quotes click here. |
