Maebelle Hopes to Get Well in Diva (06/13/10)

Posted Sunday June 13, 2010

                                                     By Mike Paradise

Sunday’s $9,000 Fox Valley Diva lured all the top Illinois bred 3-year-old filly trotters including the first five Violet stake final finishers, along with last season’s freshman distaff champion Southern Maebelle who didn’t compete in the division’s first major added money event.

The Fox Valley Diva will be Southern Maebelle’s second start under the care of trainer Gerry Hansen. The daughter of High Falls was a non-threatening fourth a week ago in her initial start for her new barn when she was reunited with driver Brian Carpenter.

Brian drove the filly in her first three 2-year-old starts including her second place finish in the Springfield Final. Southern Maebelle went on to capture the Du Quoin Championship and Balmoral’s Violet Final racing for trainer Robert Taylor.

Southern Maebelle was third in her 2010 bow in an ISOBA stake on May 9 prior to joining Hansen’s stable and the filly went a month in between those starts.

“Gerry (trainer Hansen) hadn’t had her very long and didn’t know where she was up to so I raced her from behind last week. She didn’t finish as well as we thought she might,” said Carpenter.

“We scoped her afterwards because she was a little empty on the end and she scoped a ‘seven.’ So she was sick. When she’s 100 per cent she’s a very good filly and we are expecting some big things from her this year. She’s even staked to some races in Canada.

“Southern Maebelle is Southern Rocketop’s half sister and it was Gerry who developed (Illinois Trotter of the Year) Southern Rocketop and his brother Spirit Warrior,” added Brian.

All three trotters are out of owner and breeder Claude Power’s Donerail mare Summer In The City who was honored as the 2009 Illinois Broodmare of the Year by the Illinois Standardbred Owners and Breeders Association.

Southern Maebelle is the 3-1 luke-warm morning line favorite in Sunday’s seventh race feature. Violet stake champion K’spictureperefct (Leroy Miller) starts to her left in the five slot.

The first four posts belong to St Louis Holiday (9-2, Mike Oosting), Powerful Bella (5-1, Marcus Miller), Fox Valley Click (7-2, Dale Hiteman) and Fox Valley Genuine (10-1, Steve Searle). Claire’s Rose (6-1, Homer Hochstetler) has the outside seven-hole.

The second consecutive Sunday stake for ICF freshman pacing colts and geldings will go as a pair of $5,000 Bingo Johnnie divisions this time. Last week’s Jimmy Sunshine front-stepping winner Little Pauli (Art Gregory) is listed as the 3-1 second choice in the third race second split with No. 1 Eggroll (Dave Magee) programmed at 5-2.

A pair of Roger Welch trained youngsters are the first division favorites. Dr Alfonso (Mike Oosting) is the 2-1 first flash favorite while his stable-mate Little Gus (Dave Magee, a first-time starter, is at 5-2. They’ll race un-coupled in the second race event.

The Price Is Right: Saturday was another good night for "Mike's Price Shots" when Mack Hill popped at $24.20 in race twelve. We also had the winning $181.80 Exacta cold in that race.
