Stakes Slate in Full Swing (06/15/10)Posted Tuesday, June 15, 2010 By Mike Paradise A pair of state-bred stakes head-up Balmoral’s Wednesday card—the Mike’s A Mystery for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings and The Misty Misty Misty for freshman pacing fillies. The second race $9,000 Mike’s A Mystery brings out the strong Jerald Viviani trained entry of Showmeyourstuff (Marcus Miller) and Leaveitonthetrack (Bob Smolin) and the pair will go for the stable’s fourth consecutive Illinois bred stakes victory. They’ll leave from posts 3 and 7 respectively and will open as the 8-5 early favorites. The strong Viviani duo finished one-two in the recent $46,500 Cardinal Final with Showmeyourstuff proving best by almost two lengths in 1:56.2. On May 12 Leaveitonthetrack got the best of his stable-mate in a $14,720 ISOBA stake. A week earlier it was Showmeyourstuff taking the $9,000 Iggy Magoo. The main threat appears to be last season’s Illinois Freshman Male Trotter of the Year Run And Tell Pap (Mike Cox, programmed at 5-2). After going off-stride in both his Cardinal elimination and the final, the Leo Grummell trainee put it all together in a 1:58.2 Balmoral qualifier last Wednesday morning, pulling away from the field by almost 17 lengths. The sixth race Misty Misty Misty brings back the first five finishers in last Wednesday’s Egypitan Grande, the initial season stake for ICF freshmen pacing fillies. A week ago Queen Of The Nile (Jamaica Patton) pulled off a pocket winning surprise at 26-1 odds when he paced a snappy 1:57. The winning daughter of Art’s Conquest will leave from post four while the Egyptian Grande’s overwhelming 1-5 beaten favorite Little Maeve (Dale Hiteman) landed the pole position this time and the fast closing third place finisher Fox Valley Sedona (Lavern Hostetler) drew the six. Two first-time starters in the field are What’salittlerain (Robert Taylor) and Curtis Rice’s Little Miss Henry (Marcus Miller). What’salittlerain, a daughter of Cole Muffler, was a $5,000 yearling purchase. She’s the fifth foal of broodmare Sunnie’s Lady and her first two were Madge’s Girl (1:52.3) and Life In My Day (1:51.1). Little Miss Henry, who sold for $4,000 as a yearling, is the fifth foal of One Sure Thing and the first by the sire Henry Gram. Among her half brothers is Mahdi (1:49.3). Trot Topics: Veteran Michigan horseman Henry Wilson has shipped in two trotters who are starting Wednesday. His well-bred 3-year-old Crown De Vie (race seven) was bought for $20,000 at Lexington two years ago and has five siblings who made over $100,000 and have marks of 1:56 or faster. Wilson’s four-year-old gelding Keyodee Star put over $90,000 on his card last year when he won 15 races, many of them in 3-year-old sire stakes in the Wolverine state. Keyodee Star dropped a photo in the $54,565 Michigan Sire Stake Final last September as the heavy favorite nevertheless the horse boasts victories in 21 of 37 career starts.
