$100,000 Maywood Filly Pace Tonight (06/18/10)Posted Friday June 18, 2010 Quantity and quality can be a winning combination and that’s what the Erv Miller Stable has going in Friday night’s $100,000 Maywood Filly Pace. And both ICF 3-year-old fillies—Rolldownthehiway and elimination winner Cotton Candy—drew well with posts 1, and 4 respectively. The two-slot belongs to Fox Valley Dazzle who was another Miller trainee until four days ago when she was purchased by trainer Nick Giberson for new owners Mark Winship, Matthew Rulye, Amy Giberson, all of Illinois, and Lynwood Romano of Delaware. Cotton Candy is the 2-1 programmed second choice while Miller’s other entrant Rolldownthehiway is listed next at 5-2. Former stable-mate Fox Valley Dazzle will open up at 15-1 for her new connections. Fox Valley Oracle (Dean Magee), last year’s Maywood Violet freshman championship who went on to nail down ICF 2-Year-Old Filly Pacer of the Year honors, has the other inside slot (the three) and is the 9-5 morning line favorite while Rev Me Up (programmed at 6-1) with over $93,000 on her season card, is in good shape with the five for driver Mike Oosting. Rev Me Up and Fox Valley Dazzle drew byes into the late eleventh race Friday feature. The three outside posts, the 6, 7 and 8, were landed by She’s Aware (15-1, Casey Leonard), Makena Cat (30-1, Del Chupp) and Ellamakailey (20-1, John Delong) who had the misfortune to draw the same eight-hole in last week’s elimination. “I was very pleased with her performance,” said Dave. “Cotton Candy is a good filly. She has high speed and she can carry it a long way. Earlier we had a couple of issues with her rigging and I was a little anxious with her in Balmoral’s Violet Final when she made a break. I thought she could have been right there in that stake if she didn’t go off-stride. “If the draw can go in her favor (and it did) and we can get a decent trip I think she’ll be very tough in the final,” Magee said, adding: “Cotton Candy got around these turns really well. In fact I thought she navigated Maywood even better than Balmoral’s mile track.” The ultra-consistent Rolldownthehiway was runner-up to her stable-mate last week and is in line for another likely up-close trip with the pole position. “I thought she raced super in the elimination. The filly is an excellent check-getter,” said driver Marcus Miller. “Rolldownthehiway can handle small tracks. We started her out at the fairs last year and then she came here and won a couple of early stakes at Maywood. She’s good on a half. “Cotton Candy is tough,” added Marcus. “She’s a nice horse and so is Dazzle who got a bye.” Fox Valley Dazzle stayed sharp for Friday’s championship with a winning 2:00 mile in a division of the Downstate Classic last week on the Decatur Fair Track. Single Stake Elimination: Earlier Friday evening is an elimination race for next week’s $100,000 Maywood Pace. The first five finishers in the second race will join Delco Willowbee, Fox Valley Escort and Southern Sport—who drew byes—in the Friday, June 25 championship for state-bred male sophomore pacers. The Tom Simmons stable has no less than five horses in Friday’s elimination and three will race coupled because of common ownership—Burnthemidnightoil, Buzzd On Sudzz and Cooperstown Kid. The Simmons barn also sends out JHS and Passion For Today. The elimination also lured Parker Place, Indescribable and Voomerang, another Roger Welch trainee who like his stable-mate Ellamakailey also managed to land Maywood’s dreaded eight-hole.
County Fair Report Five more Mid-Western Illinois Racing Association champions were crowned Wednesday during the second night of racing at the Greene County Fair at Carrollton. The $4,209 2-year-old filly trot division turned out to be an easy 7 1/2 length front-end triumph for Bonnie’s Star who made her debut for owner, trainer and driver Thomas Graham. Michael Pryor powered past with Powerful Position to nail down the $4,485 freshman colt trotting division by 2 ½ lengths in 2:06.4 . . . Driver and trainer Mike Brink eked out a neck victory with Elloluv (2:01.2) over Pryor and his drive Yippy who made a break earlier in the race in the $4,086 3-year-old filly pace division . . . The $2,263 sophomore colt pace splits went to the front-stepping Holy Muffler in 2:00.2 for driver Stephan Halford II, and Jerry Mim’s Mountains Big Boy, who drew off by 7 1/2 lengths in his 2:01.3 mile with Terry Skinner at his lines.
