Delco Willobee Lands Maywood's Favorite Role (06/25/10)

The all important post position draw on a half-miler couldn’t have gone any better for the talented Delco Willobee in Friday night’s $100,000 Maywood Pace. The pre-stake favorite landed the coveted pole position and should be the heavy choice to capture the added money event for state-bred three-year-old pacing colts and geldings.

“When my dad (owner and trainer Jesse De Long) called me to tell me the horse had the rail I thought at first he was kidding around with me” said driver John De Long. “Obviously I’m pretty happy with the draw.”

The homebred son of Ft Apache Hanover breezed in his first three season starts at Maywood Park in a trio of stakes and was a very impressive 1:51 first up winner in his big track debut at Balmoral in his Cardinal elimination.

However he had to settle for third place after a rugged trip in a sea of water in Balmoral’s Cardinal Final earlier this month, two lengths behind Power Of A Moment and runner-up stable-mate Iam Bonsera who both earned a trip to Canada last week.

“Power Of A Moment is the first horse that Delco Willobee ever came first over with me, looked in the eye, and couldn’t get past. But you are also talking about a horse good enough a week later to race in the North America Cup eliminations. Last year he was the Illinois 2-Year-Old Horse of the Year while my horse was racing at county fairs.

“I didn’t realize until later when I saw the chart on the Cardinal stake that Delco Willobee came a second quarter in 26 and a piece and of course that took some sting out of him. That’s why he probably came up a little short,” continued the 21-year-old native of Wisconsin.

“I didn’t feel he was going that fast. We were so strung out I was just trying to ease my horse up into contention. I was 11 lengths off at the (first :27.2) quarter and by the half (:55.4) I was two lengths off so my horse made up nine lengths.

“Marcus (driver Miller) got the jump on us in that race and it was the right move. Delco Willobee has never been a super-big leaver off the gate. Friday night I’ll go out with my horse to protect my post position and then we’ll just see after that how it goes.”

Just like the Maywood Filly Pace a week ago, this one-hundred grand stake will be another late eleventh race event. It has a scheduled 10:30 pm (Chicago time) post but so did its sister stake that went off at 11:07 on another Friday night card that ended around midnight locally and after 1 am for anyone still awake on the east coast.

Delco Willobee will open as the 2-1 early favorite. Last week’s Maywood Pace elimination winner Indescribable (6-1, Dean Magee) landed the six-slot while runner-up Voomerang (3-1, Mike Oosting) again drew poorly with the seven-hole. He had the eight a week ago and Friday it belongs to the Paul Stafford Stable’s Fox Valley Escort (10-1, Dale Hiteman).

In posts two through four you’ll find Parker Place (15-1, Travis Seekman), Southern Sport (9-2, Todd Warren), JHS (8-1, Mike Rogers) and Burnthemightnightoil (15-1, Dave Magee.
