A Look Back to Sorce Ann (06/29/10)Posted Tuesday June 29, 2010 This is another in a weekly feature exclusively on www.harnessillinois.com. Every week I’ll post a least one “Looking Back feature. Mostly they’ll be of the great horses who have competed in our state through the years. At times they’ll be pictures from the winner’s circle, special celebrations, and in some cases old memorable race track scenes. Some of these photos haven’t been printed or posted in decades . . . others have never been printed at all. Looking Back SORCE ANN As a 3-year-old the homebred trotting filly would rattle off 11 consecutive victories on four different Illinois tracks—Balmoral, Maywood, Sportsman’s and Springfield—and would finish the 1995 season with 13 wins in 19 starts and earnings of $214,258. Also that summer she also captured the $50,000 Springfield State Fair Championship and the $103,000 Lady Ann Reed stake at Sportsman’s. Bred and owned by Jerry and Helen Logan of Coffeyville Kansas, the daughter of Sorcerer Hanover out of the Logan’s Legend Hanover mare Copa De Oro earned $114,658 in her freshman season when she went 9-for-15 and captured both the Springfield freshman crown and Maywood’s Violet Final, also with Magee. The Jerry Logan trainee was second in her first season in the American National at the old Sportsman’s five-eighths track. To view Archived Notes and Quotes click here. County Fair Report Day two of four consecutive racing programs at the Jasper County Fair in Newton was highlighted by the Big 10 three-year-old pacing divisions. Both of the $2,313 splits for state-bred colts went to the Graham family and both the first division winner Tarr and second event victor Enry were clocked in 2:01 flat with Tom Graham, Jr. at their lines. Each home-bred is trained by Tom Graham for owner and breeder Carol Graham. Tarr’s victory was his first of the season in five starts while Enry, unraced at two, won for the second time as a 3-year-old in his sixth career start . . . The two $2,313 Big 10 Filly Pace Divisions had completely different outcomes. In the first Pickaplacetopark (Kelcey Perymond) came first up and held off a fast closing Hurricane Tinia (Ronnie Gillespie) by a scant nose in 2:03 for trainer Marcus Turner and owner Kelly Perrymond, a fellow Mississippian . . . A breaking horse in the second division impeded all but the front-end winner Baby Annie (2:08.1) who ended up 15 lengths ahead of the field for driver Kyle Husted. Pamela Coleman trains the daughter of Cole Muffler for Salam, Illinois owner Jerry Graham . . . The Tuesday and Wednesday cards both have a 1 pm first post.
