Mississippians Follow Greener Path Up North (07/08/10)Posted Thursday July 8, 2010 By Mike Paradise Little Miss Henry and Fox Valley Dublin, a pair of Mississippi owned juvenile filly pacers who passed their first Maywood Park test with flying colors, go for back-to-back stake victories in Thursday night $7,000 divisions of the Mi Metallica. Fox Valley Dublin’s 1:58.2 winning mile for owner and trainer Johnny Rice of Starkville, Mississippi, gave her young driver Terry Skipper a birthday present he won’t soon forget. Terry guided the daughter of Incredible Finale out of the Cole Muffler broodmare Duncan’s Sister to a trio of triumphs last month on the Illinois County Fair Circuit and knew she had a big shot in both the filly and his initial Maywood outing. “Fox Valley Dublin is a nice filly and what I like about her best is that she has a big last half in her,” continued Terry, also of Starkville, Mississippi. “You can duck her off the gate and anytime you want to pull her she’ll give it her all to get there.” Fox Valley Dublin drew the six slot in the fourth race second division of the Mi Metallica where she’ll open up as the 9-5 morning line choice when she takes on Tuff Rose (programmed at 2-1, Brian Carpenter), She’s Automatic (15-1, Tom Harmer), Run Tell Dat (9-2, Mike Cox), Chickiechickiewawa (8-1, John de Long), Shake That Thing (8-1) and Happy Surprise (20-1, Gary Rath). Little Miss Henry, owned and trained by another Starkville, MI native Curtis Rice, went right to the front for her new driver Casey Leonard and drew away from the first Juxtaposition split by five-plus lengths, posting a 1:57.2 mile. “Little Miss Henry filly is very quick and really good in the turns.” said Casey Leonard after the race. “In that last turn she just sprinted away from them and I kind of shut her down or she probably would have gone even faster. “In the first eighth we were really rocking out of there,” added Casey. “With their “Quick Start” sometimes you’re going so fast into that first turn it can be tough on a horse. But not this filly, she just zipped though it. I really appreciate the opportunity to drive her. She’s quick. Curtis told me just go out and drive her like I owned her and I did.” Curtis Rice, who has been involved with horses “about 20 years,” followed the “greener” road out of Mississippi and up to Illinois. “The money looked appetizing at the fairs in Illinois, so we just followed the money up here,” said Curtis who has been racing horses on our county fair tracks since the mid-1990s before deciding it was time to step to the windy city circuit. “At the fairs we go for half the money that they do in Chicago,” continued the 49-year-old Mississippian. “Little Miss Henry is a nice filly and I wanted to give her a shot to go for some better money up here. I’ve got her eligible for the ISOBA, the Hanover and the Sarah Meyers. She can really scoot around these (Maywood) turns and I think she’ll do just fine on a big track, too. “Little Miss Henry has come along really nice for me. She’s never given me any problems and has been a nice filly to be around, added Curtis.” Little Miss Henry is the heavy 6-5 programmed favorite in the second race first split drawing the favorable two-slot with Casey where she’ll battle Silent Revolt (5-2, Art Gregory, Jr.), Primrose Path (6-1, Trenton Watson), Kissed By The Sun (15-1, Gary Rath), Red Hot N Sassy (4-1, Jamaica Patton) and Katie Mack (12-1, Terry Skinner). County Fair Report Racing got underway at Martinsville Tuesday afternoon, the first of three programs at the Clark County Fair, with the Illini 3-Year-Old divisions of both gaits and sexes being decided. The combination of driver Brian Carpenter and trainer Gerald Hansen posted a double in the sophomore trot events. Jesse’s Gal made her second career start a success in the first split with a seven-length romp with Carpenter in 2:06.4. After Fox Valley Decoy nailed down her first win in the second in 2:07.2, Hansen’s Wolf Creek Pass avenged his loss to stable-mate M A Cody last week at Rushville in the Illini colt division with a 1 and ½ length victory in 2:02.2 with Carpenter. It was the son of Physic Spirit’s third win to go along with two seconds in seven season starts. Wolf Creek Pass took Balmoral’s Speedy Rodney stake back in April . . . The Illini 3-year-old pace divisions went to Yippy (Michael Pryor), her fourth on the year, in 2:00.2 and Hurricane Tinia (Ronnie Gillespie), her second in her last three starts, in 2:03 . . . Carol Graham’s home-bed Enry sped to his third triumph in a row in the first colt division with a 2:00 clocking for driver Tom Graham, Jr. and LT’s Big Jake rallied to take the second split in 2:02 for driver-trainer J D Finn.
