A Saturday Night Delight (07/010/10)

Posted Saturday, July 10, 2010

                                                                   By Mike Paradise

While there’s not a five or six figure stake race or a Free For All on tonight’s program at Balmoral Park, I do like the 14-race card. It’s been a long time since the far south suburban track has presented a Saturday program without a single bottom-end $4,000 claimer or a conditioned event with price tags on it.

The lone claiming event on the card is the always very competitive (eighth) race for horses in for $10,000 though $15,000.

While two $7,000 divisions of the Hot Head stake for ICF three-year-old male pacers—races four and five—are the headliners, there are a pair of $5,800 conditioned races that I particularly like. Each came up strong. In fact both the ninth and twelfth races would have been the track’s Free For All event a month or so ago.

Four horses entered in last week’s Cook County stake at Maywood—Sports Fanatic, My Boy Luke, Omaha Survivor and Fort Silky—are taking on Berry’s Creek finalist Morgan Shark and the Nelson Willis trained entry of Park Land Hotshot and Vette Man who both competed in Hoosier Park Opens last month in race nine.

In the twelfth, Park Lane Deputy, Delightful Five, Who’s The Boss, The Quiet Mon and Kansas Wildcat, all horses who have been in Balmoral Free For All events this year, will tangle and are joined by Sawgrass Farm’s Four Starz Trace, winner of a $66,480 PASS stake at The Meadows a month ago, and the Erv Miller Stable’s On A Tear, winner of over $300,000 in his career.

Saturday’s first race for state-bred two-year-olds has some potential starters for next week’s $60,000 (est.) Hanover stake for freshman colts and geldings. It includes the Hanover eligible first-time starters Playin For Keeps and Flowmaster, both sons of Cole Muffler with very successful brothers.

Playin For Keeps (Dave Magee), bowing for trainer Nick Giberson, is a full brother to Illinois standout Power Of A Moment (1:50.4), while the Scott Foster Stable’s Flowmaster is the younger sibling of Glass Pack (1:49.4) and Double Trouble (1:51) who raced successful for Foster in 2008 and 2009.

In Saturday’s second race the Joe Seekman Stable’s Rocknroll Fever (Travis Seekman) is staying sharp for a start a week from tonight in the $37,000 (est.) Hanover stake for sophomore pacing colts. In race three  the first-time 3-year-old starter Sweet Vengeance for trainer Todd La Fountaine is a Real Desire colt who is a half brother to millionaire Bettor Sweet (1:47.2).

In the fourth race, the first division of the Hot Head, Fox Valley Escort (a full brother to Breeders Crown champion Fox Valley Topaz), Charlie Beans, Indescribable, Finance The Master and Parker Place all are eligible to the Hanover 3-year-old colt stake, along with Fox Valley Emelio, Come On Honey and Voomerang from the second Hot Head split.

Other Illinois bred notables who are likely Hanover stake bound are the Miller Stable’s duo of Iam Bonsera, the third place finisher in the $100,000 North America Cup Consolation, Cardinal champion Power Of A Moment, and recent $100,000 Maywood Pace champ Southern Sport for trainer Kristopher Reynolds.
