Stakes Aplenty Sunday (07/011/10)

Posted Sunday, July 11, 2010

                                                                            By Mike Paradise

Four smallish stakes are sprinkled on Balmoral’s Sunday card with a number of first-time freshman filly trotters in action in the first two races and some familiar three-year-old trotting colts and geldings slugging it out near the end of the 12-race card.

In between a bulky field off 11 distaffers will tangle in the seventh race $9,000 Ohyouprettything, another stake in the wide open 3-year-old filly pacing division which seems to have a new winner after every race. The programmed favorites are Mystical Victress (3-1, Marcus Miller) and Fox Valley Oracle (4-1, Casey Leonard)

Only two of the 13 fillies going postward in the two $4,000 Vaporize stake divisions have a pari-mutuel start under their belt—High Game (Mike Cox) and Make It Rain (Jared Finn) both in the first split.

In the second division the 9-5 morning line favorite Powerfulconnection breezed in her fair track start at Marshall and also in a trio of races at Springfield for trainer Pamela Coleman. Todd Warren takes over the lines on this home-bred filly eligible for the Hanover filly stake.

The $9,000 Brandenburg stake for ICF second season male trotters is headed up by current season stakes winners Leaveitonthetrack (3-1 morning line, Bob Smolin), Muscatine (9-2, Dale Hiteman) and Wolf Creek Pass (7-2, Brian Carpenter) who will race coupled with Dutch Commander (7-2, Dave Magee) and M A Cody (7-2, Mike Oosting).

Both Wolf Creek pass and M A Cody are from the Gerald Hansen Stable and have stayed sharp racing on the Rushville and Martinsville fair tracks. Brian Carpenter has driven both horses and while he guides Wolf Creek Pass tonight he thinks M A Cody could end up being the better of the two before this season is over.

“Wolf Creek Pass is has good as anybody else in his division,” said Brian. “The sleeper Sunday is M A Cody. Every time we qualified this horse he drew off but when we put him in a race and he would break. We couldn’t put our finger on what was the problem.

“Then Gerry (trainer Hansen) decided to cut (gelded) him and he found that one of the cords was bigger than it should have been and it had some infection. It definitely was bothering the horse. Ever since M A Cody was gelded he has not made a break and his last couple of starts were fair tracks and he got around those two small tracks just fine and dandy.

“Now when we train these two horses together and Wolf Creek pass sits on M A Cody’s back, Cody just draws off from him. I think I’ve got a good shot with Wolf Creek Pass especially since he drew the rail but M A Cody has a lot of ability and if he keeps it together he’ll be tough too beat.”

Besides all the ICF stakes still coming up this season M A Cody is eligible to the Hanover and American National open company added money events at Balmoral and The Galt at Maywood.

Wolf Creek Pass is owned by Steve Poore of Beecher, IL who also shares ownership of M A Cody with Robert Rietveld of Bourbonnais, Il. Since Robert is a part-owner of Dutch Commander with Taylor Rietveld and Paul Gibson (Crete, IL), the trio of trotters will be a three-horse entry in the Brandenburg.
