Seekman Points Youngters to Hanover Night (07/17/10)Posted Saturday, July 17, 2010 By Mike Paradise One of the fixtures on Hanover Night at Balmoral Park has been veteran trainer Joe Seekman. Through the years the 46-year-old Michigan native has had more than his share of Hanover champions crowned. Seekman often arrives with quality and quantity and once again he has both Saturday evening. Joe has no less than 10 youngsters competing in 9 of the 10 of the Hanover stake divisions on the program, mostly well bred pacing colts and fillies. “The Hanover’s are a good starting point for young horses and in the past we’ve usually done well with them in there” said Seekman. “A lot of my horses started out in the Hanover’s and went on do very well such as Three Olives. “I’m happy to see they’ve held it in July,” continued Joe. “When it was raced in June it could be hard to get your two-year-olds ready in time, especially if it’s a tough and a long winter. “We’ve got a couple of nice youngsters again this year. I’ve got a Canadian filly that already won up there in the Gold Series so she’s not here but I do have some others that could turn out to be good horses.” We asked Joe to tell us about his Saturday Hanover starters. “Jamaica Hanover (race one) is a real well-bred filly,” said Joe. “She’s got the pedigree. Little Miss Dragon is in her family. She’s a nice filly that we’ve liked all year long and she came out of the box ready with a nice win for us. “Southwest (race two) is another well-bred filly. Her first qualifier was just so-so but she had a big improvement in her second qualifier. It appears she’s best racing near the front so the outside draw with the seven-hole is a little concern but we’ll see how it works out Saturday. “Eastern Star (race three) could be another nice filly for us. I was very pleased with the trip Travis (driver Seekman) gave her. We thought she’d be a more come-from-behind filly. She got a couple of lucky breaks in the race and she got a nice start in her. “We thought that Major Najor (race four) was the second best (2-year-old) colt in the stable but when it came time to qualify he just wanted to goof off. He trained down super but he wanted to goof around at the track. I told Travis maybe he just doesn’t get along with you so we switched to Hiteman for the third qualifier and Dale got him around there all right. Trace Tetrick is driving Saturday and if he gets along with him who knows? The colt has tons of ability, “Make You Famous (race five) is a full brother to Perrito Caliente. He trained down well and so far he’s done anything right. I’ll call him an average two-year-old. “Flip Flop Summer (race eight) has a nice first year for us. She hasn’t found the right race yet to get going this year. Because she made good money ($133,186) she had to race against older horses when we brought her back. It’s tough when you have to put three-year-olds in against the aged mares. We’re hoping that having her race against horses her own age will see a spark in her. “Rocknroll Fever (race 11) has got the breeding. He’s a Rocknroll Hanover colt out of Cyber Wave and we all know how good of a filly she was. This colt prefers to race up close and in the hunt. “I was very happy with Makes You Wonder’s (race 12) effort last Saturday with the aged horses. It looks like she may be coming around and is peaking at the right time. “Artcam (race 12) has had a lot of bad racing luck up in Canada. She got impeded on Tuesday there in the stretch. She just seems to go with them and seems to be the good “check-getter” type. She made $95,000 last year with just one win.”
