He's So Hot Looks Like a "Steal" (07/24/10)

Posted Saturday, July 24, 2010

                                                                         By Mike Paradise

While it’s early in the season for two-year-olds, we’ve already seen a few young state-breds that appear loaded with potential. One of those budding state-bred prospects is the Roger Welch Stable’s He’s So Hot, a winner of a Hanover division a week ago who will go postward tonight in a Mini Me elimination at Balmoral.

He’s So Hot is the seventh foal of the Broadway Express broodmare She’s Redhot and among her sons and daughters are such top-notch pacers as Brian And Kellie (1:49.4), Hot N Sporty (1:50.2), She’s So Hot (1:51.1) and He’s Red Hot (1:50.4).

I caught up with Roger after He’s So Hot was a easy four-length winner in his $25,000 Hanover stake split in 1:52.4. The son of Sportamaster won his Balmoral debut on June 30 in 1:54.3 with a eye-opening 25 flat last quarter (we’ll get into that outing more another time).

I told Roger I thought the $22,000 sale price for He’s So Hot by his Wisconsin owners Beau and Pat De Long and Ernest Miller Jr. at last year’s Walker Sale was a ‘steal’ when you consider his family tree and what is brothers and sisters brought.

Roger agreed and then proceeded to tell me how being in the right place at the right time was the reason He’s So Hot is in his barn.

“He’s So Hot sold as the last horse in the sale,” said Roger. “I looked at him three times prior to the sale and I loved him. But I knew is sister (Redhot’s Memory) sold for something $95,000 the year before. With the economy the way it is I thought this horse would sell for $50,000 plus, which was out of my league. I didn’t have any owners to buy that horse for that kind of a price, so we ended up buying other yearlings.

“Beau and Pat De Long were sitting right in front of me at the sale,” continued Welch. “They of course own Voomerang (1:50.2) and I’ve trained horses for them for many, many years. They also go to the sales and pick out and buy their own horses. They had bid on the horse before he’s So Hot and the price on the horse that they wanted got up to something like $45,000.They weren’t happy because they were bidding way over their budget and still didn’t get the horse they wanted, so they got up, and were leaving

“Meanwhile He’s So Hot is going in the sale and he’s hanging at $12,000. So I grabbed Beau and said ‘where are you going?’ He said: ‘I hung around for an hour and half for a horse that I couldn’t get so I’m leaving.’

“I told him the best horse in the sale is in the ring and right now the bidding is at only $12,000.

“They checked the (sale) book and said they never looked at him. I said: ‘trust me, he’s the best horse in the sale and I’ve looked at him three times.’

“I told them to bid on He’s So Hot and they did,” continued Roger. “They looked at the book again and said he is bred good. They bid on him again and asked me are you should about this horse. I said: ‘Trust me. If you don’t want him I’ll take him.’

“They ended up getting him for $22,000 sight unseen. They never looked at him. They bought him strictly on my word. Beau pointed to the book and said : ‘He better be good because you’re going to be training him.’

“Later on they told me we want you to tell us is that he’s as good as Voomerang. I said I can’t . . . I think he’s better than Voomerang,” replied Roger.

“The De Long’s broke He’s So Hot at their farm in Clinton, Wisconsin. They trained him down there and then they brought him over to me. Since I’ve had him he’s been perfect.”

He’s So Hot landed in the third Mini Mi elimination (seventh race), the strongest of the three eliminations. He’ll open as the 8-5 programmed choice from the two-slot, while Mr. Bedrock (Dave Magee), 2-for-2 for the Robert Taylor Stable including a 1:52.3 Hanover split victory is at 3-1 from post four, and the Nelson Willis Stable’s Fox Valley Libero (Todd Warren), riding a four-race win streak that includes a 1:53 Hanover triumph is at 7-2 from the seven-slot.
