Easy Path to Finals for Sophomores (07/25/10)

Posted Sunday July 25, 2010

                                                                     By Mike Paradise

Single elimination races are on tap Sunday evening to decide the finalists for next week’s state-bred stake championships and it won’t take much to gain the finals in any of the three-year-old added money events.

In Sunday’s fourth race Fox Valley Evita elimination for trotting fillies only one distaffer will be eliminated. That’s right a finish anywhere from first to ninth in the $7,000 elim will get a filly into next Sunday’s $44,000 where they’ll join Bret Wilfong’s KF’s Pictureperfect who drew a bye.

The homebred Violet champion is staying sharp for the Fox Valley Evita by racing in a non-winner of four lifetime trot in tonight’s sixth race.

Hanover stake victor Powerful Bella (Marcus Miller) has been installed as the 3-1 program favorite with Southern Maebelle (Brian Carpenter) at 7-2 and the entry of St. Louis Holiday (Art Gregory Jr.) and Merry High (Mike Oosting) next at 4-1. Other potential finalists are Miss Brody (Sam Widger), Vapor Girl (Lavern Hostetler), Claire’s Rose (Dave Magee), Fox Valley Click (Dale Hiteman), Fox Valley Sienna (Dave Avenatti) and Fox Valley Ripple (Del Chupp).

The eleventh race Kadabra elimination for state-bred sophomore trotters has 10 horses vying for a seventh place finish or better to advance to the stake’s $46,000 championship. Awaiting them is Showmeyourstuff, Rock Hollywood and Leaveitonthetrack who drew byes based on the current season money earning’s at entry time.

The Kadabra elim will likely see a good portion of the public’s money going to last year’s American National champ Run And Tell Pap (programmed at 3-1, Mike Cox) and the three horse entry of M A Cody (Mike Oosting), Wolf Creek Pass (Brian Carpenter) and Dutch Commander (Dace Magee), all opening at 6-1.

They’ll be challenged by Super Sonic Flash (15-1, Sam Widger), Somore Set (8-1, Lance Scurlock), Muscatine (5-1, Dale Hiteman), Fox Valley Smarty (10-1, Brett Ballinger), Powerful Speed (7-2, Todd Warren) and Big Bucks (6-1, Casey Leonard)/

The Ann Vonian elimination for Illinois bred second season pacing fillies (race nine) also will see the first seven finishers move on to next Saturday’s $56,000 final to take on Cotton Candy, Fox Valley Dazzle and Fox Valley Oracles who drew byes and won’t have to come back on a short week for this Saturday championship.

The Ann Vonian elimination morning line favorite is Mystical Victress who comes off a lifetime best 1:51.3 mile in a Hanover stake last week when 2009 regular driver Brandon Simpson came back to town to guide the Erv Miller trainee.

Tonight Marcus Miller is happy to be back at Mystical Victress lines. Last summer in a Loyal Opposition elimination Marcus had a choice to drive Mystical Victress or the Miller stable’s She’s Stella. He  took the latter.

“At that time their lines were almost identical,” said Marcus. “They both drew into the same stake so I had to make a choice and I picked She’s Stella because she is faster. But it ended up being the wrong choice. Mystical Victress went on to have a very good year and won some big stakes.”

In her first season Mystical Victress ended up capturing the Local Opposition Final and the Sarah Myers and banked over $132,000 while She’s Stella made only $6,508 as a freshman.

Marcus opted off the stable’s consistent check-getter Rolldownthehiway in Sunday’s Ann Vonian elimination and she’ll be steered this time by Mike Oosting away from post six. Mystical Victress has post four while the first there slots belong to Reilly’s Daughter (Dale Hiteman), Ribbons N Pearls (Dave Magee) and Ellamakailey (John Delong), in that order.

Longshots Fox Valley Angie (12-1, Jamaica Patton), Fox Valley Naomi (15-1, Todd Warren) and Makena Cat (20-1, Del Chupp) landed post 8, 9and 10, respectively.
