Looking Back to B'Haven (08/05/10)Posted Thursday August 5, 2010 By Mike Paradise Looking Back B’HAVEN A son of the Illinois sire Eddie Havens, B’Haven was described in the Sportsman’s Park Historical Review of 1993 as “a little horse, frail and a frail in appearance but stout and swift in performance.” B’Haven is shown here with his driver Wilber Long who received a $2,000 check from the track’s management when at the age of five the gelding was the first to pace in 2:00 at the old Cicero, Illinois track. Another 2:00 mile at Sportsman’s wouldn’t be raced until four years later when in 1959 the great Bye Bye Byrd shattered B’Haven’s record with a 1:58.3 mile on the five-eighths oval. B’Haven was retired with career earnings of $229,717, a lot of money some 55 years ago. In 1979 he was the first horse inducted into the Illinois Hall of Fame.
County Fair Report Mount Sterling Lures Oosting and Marcus: Maywood Park’s loss Thursday night is Mount Sterling’s gain. Two of the Chicago circuit’s top drivers—Mike Oosting and Marcus Miller—are in Brown County for tonight’s lucrative $20,000 Taser Gun stake, the richest race on the Illinois County Fair Circuit. And those attending the will be able to bet on the race with eight talented pacers because pari-mutuel wagering is offered at the Mount Sterling Fair. The eighth race Taser Gun will have win-place-show betting, as well as $2 Exacta and $ Trifecta wagering. A pair of $2 Daily Double wagers is on the program starting on races one and four and $2 Exactas are on all the races with another $2 Trifecta on race five, a MWIRA 2-Year-Old Trot. The three programmed favorites in the Taser Gun drew the first three inside posts. Omaha Survivor (2-1, Mike Oosting) has the rail, with Big Daddy Woo Woo (3-1, Nick Prather) next with the two and Fort Silky (5-2, Marcus Miller) to his right with the three. The fastest career mile in the field belongs to the Nick Prather Stable’s Big Daddy Woo Woo, a 1:50.1 clocking at Balmoral on June 12. Bruce Pacitti’s Sports Fanatic won in 1:50.3 last year, also at Balmoral. When Ronnie Gillespie drove the first two winners at the Effingham County Fair at Altamont it gave the 38-year-old Chicago native five consecutive victories. Ronnie brought home the last three on Monday’s program. The streak ended in a Tuesday’s first maiden event (race 4) when Jansen Place was overtaken in the stretch by the Wilson Racing Stable’s CJ Marshall (Michael Johnson).
