No Big Surprise to Daulton (08/06/10)

Posted Friday August 6, 2010

                                                                           By Mike Paradise

When Finance The Minster pulled off an upset at 44-1 odds in last Saturday’s $57,500 Incredible Finale Final, further mudding the waters in the state-bred three-year-old male pacing division, it came as a surprise to just about everyone.

I said almost everyone because while the majority of the Balmoral players were stunned and the horse’s driver Bob Smolin was even astonished, Finance The Minster’s long-time trainer Lloyd Daulton wasn’t.

“His win in that stake really didn’t surprise me any,” said the veteran conditioner matter-of-factly. “I thought the horse had the ability to do it.”

At the age of 83 and a trainer for 55 of those years you could probably expect that nothing much is going to surprise Lloyd these days.

“Finance The Master had a lot of problems as a two-year-old,” continued the Kentucky native. “The horse popped a curb and he popped a quarter-crack (in his hoof). He just had all kinds of problems last year. He showed potential but he never did get a chance to show what he could do.”

Bred and owned by long-time Highland, Wisconsin breeder Donald Laufenberg. Finance The Master made only nine starts as a two-year-old, winning one (in 1:55) at Balmoral and made his last freshman start in early October, ending up with a modest $7,011 on his card.

Finance The Master didn’t start again until six months later when he won a non-winner of two at Hosier Park on May 7 in a snappy 1:53.3. A few races later he showed a indicator that good things were on the horizon when he had a 26.3 last quarter in his Cardinal elimination at Balmoral; however he was a non-threatening sixth in the final.

A son of Sportsmaster out of Laufenberg’s former Springfield champion mare Finance The Farm, the horse bounced back with a new lifetime mark of 1:52 in a July 17 conditioned pace. He was impeded by a breaker in his Incredible Finale elimination when he managed to finish fourth a make the final.

Bob Smolin was Finance The Master’s fourth different driver in the horse’s last five starts and after a sparkling 1:50.3 come-from-behind victory (26 flat last quarter) Smolin figures to be back at the horse’s lines for a long time.

“Bobby Smolin gave him a good drive,” quipped Lloyd.

“Turning for home I thought I was just going to try and sneak through some openings and see what happened,” Smolin told the Balmoral Publicity Department after Saturday’s upset. “When I got some clearance to the outside I hit him once, popped the wheel disk and he just took off like he was shot out of a cannon. That was one of the biggest final quarters from a horse that I’ve ever sat behind.”

Lloyd Daulton has been in our Standardbred business a long-time and the word “retirement” isn’t in his vocabulary,

“I’ve been training horses since 1955,” continued Lloyd. “I remember B’Haven from that year. He was a little thin horse who went on to become the first 2:00 horse in Illinois.

“I’m going on 83 but I still enjoying working with the horses and I don’t want to give it up,” said Lloyd who conditioned Super Night 1998 Orange and Blue champion Fox Valley Admiral.

Daulton is uncertain of the immediately plans for Finance The Master.

“I’m not sure yet if I’ll be sending the horse down to Springfield. I am pointing him to Super Night, said Daulton who resides in his home state of Kentucky in the town of Nancy, about 135 miles southeast of Louisville.
