Looking Back to Ideal Angel (08/10/10)

Posted Tuesday August 10, 2010

                                                                           By Mike Paradise

This is another in a weekly feature exclusively on www.harnessillinois.com. Every week I’ll post a least one “Looking Back feature. Mostly they’ll be of the great horses who have competed in our state through the years. At times they’ll be pictures from the winner’s circle, special celebrations, and in some cases old memorable race track scenes. Some of these photos haven’t been printed or posted in decades . . . others have never been printed at all.

Just by right clicking your computer mouse, going to “Save Picture As”, you can make your own jpeg copy of any Looking Back photo posted. You can e-mail them and share with a friend or maybe start your own computer file of “Looking Back” memories.

                                                                              IDEAL ANGEL

One of a handful of horses to win back-to-back Super Night championships this daughter of Ideal Society is shown here capturing the $100,000 Ann Vonian Final with Dave Magee in 1994 at Sportsman’s Park as a four-year-old after a summer earlier taking the $182,000 Grandma Ann title at the old Cicero, IL track with Ronnie Marsh.

Plucked out of Illini-Standardbred Sale as a yearling in 1991 by her trainer Mark Fransen for owners Michael Dockendorf, David Andalman and Steve Zatkin for only $8,500, Ideal Angel pulled own almost $300,000 in her 36 career starts in a 3 1/2 year racing span.

In her three-year-old campaign she posted victories in 8 of her 9 season starts, and Magee and Marsh each drove her to four wins that included $56,500 and $27,500 stakes triumphs at Balmoral Park against her rival Incredashell.  As a broodmare 8 of Ideal Angel’s first 9 foals made the race track and 4 those took marks of 1:56 or faster.
