Reviews Lean, State-Breds Aren't (08/17/10)

Posted Tuesday, August 17, 2010

                                                                      By Mike Paradise

Tuesday’s Springfield card came up very much like Monday’s. The open company Review stakes look very sparse while the state-bred races filled just fine, including both Illinois State Fair Colt Stakes for older pacers.

Nine trotters will slug it out in the $8,000 seventh race championship for four-year-old olds and up. It’s a wide open affair with Jerry and Helen Logan’s Kan Target (Dave Magee) the 3-1 morning line favorite, followed at 4-1 by Mystical Banker (Jamaica Patton), the 2008 Horse and Groom Series winner at The Meadowlands, and Doug Graham’s Toucan (5-1) who is looking for his third consecutive victory.

The eighth race $8,000 champion ship for state-bred pacing fillies ages four and up landed six starters, including the recent $50,000 Parklane Powerful winner Ms Maggie (programmed at 3-1 with Marcus Miller) and the Nick Giberson Stable’s My Heart Was True (4-1), the runner-up in that July 31 stake.

Brandon Simpson is back in town to handle My Heart Was True, a 12-time winner last year all with Brandon at her lines. The filly earned $178,138 for her Michigan owners L & L Devisser, chalking State Fair championships at both Springfield and DuQuoin, along with a Hanover and the Ann Vonian at Balmoral.

The seven-year-old Ms Maggie has $480,672 on her card for Illinois owners Geis Enterprise and Bert Hochsprung while splitting her time racing for the Erv Miller Stable in Illinois and for Julie Miller at The Meadowlands. The daughter of Richess Hanover took her mark of 1:49.4 when she annexed the 2009 Lorna Propes Final on Balmoral’s Super Night.

Tuesday’s fourth race $27,500 Greyhound Review Stake for two-year-old trotter geldings has five starters and will offer Win-Place-Show and Exacta wagering, while the $15,000 Review Stake for sophomore filly pacers landed only four horses and will be limited to Win and Exacta betting only.

Two other Review Stakes will go as non-wagering events before the regular 12 noon Springfield card

The $15,000 event for two-year-old trot matches The Todd La Fountaine Stable’s Queen Jane against Mike Brink’s Caviar’s Delight. It will be followed by The Baker Review Stake for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings with the Dirk Simpson Stable’s, Arts Fav’ Won, the Tom Simmons Stable’s Nothingfornothing and Stacy Ruddick’s Draw Poker vying for the winner’s share of a $15,000 put.

Wednesday Spotlight on Sophomore Males: The draw is out for Wednesday $35,000 Illinois State Fair Colt Stake Championship for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings and elimination winners Iam Bonsera (1:52.4, last quarter in :25.1) with Dave Magee and Voomerang (1:52.2) with Mike Oosting will start alongside each other with posts 7 and 8, respectively. The rail belongs to Power Of A Moment (Marcus Miller).

In slots two through six you’ll find Fox Valley Barbosa (Brian Carpenter), Delco Willobee (John De Long), Fox Valley Emelio (Dale Hiteman), Enry (Tom Graham Jr.) and Cooperstown Kid (Todd Warren). Finance The Master (Bob Smolin) and The Roman Conquest (TBA) landed the outside 9 and 10 posts, in that order in the tenth and final race on the card that starts at 12 noon.

Also on tomorrow’s Springfield program is the $35,000 championship for state-bred sophomore trotting colts and geldings which will go as race nine. Here’s how they’ll line up, starting with the one-slot out:

Leaveitonthetrack (Bob Smolin), Showmeyourstuff (Marcus Miller), Run And Tell Pap (Mike Cox), Big Bucks (Brandon Simpson), Dutch Commander (Mike Oosting), Fox Valley Smarty (Brewtt Ballinger), Muscatine (Dale Hiteman), Super Sonic Flash (Rick Schrock), Rock Hollywood (Dave Magee) and Powerful Speed (Todd Warren).

Another One Pops: Mike's Price Shots stayed hot nailing the first race winner Monday at Springfield Number One Kid for a $36.89 winning ticket. Our other Price SWhot Monday Sign Out in the sixth race finished second at 8-1 odds,
