Open Stakes Demise Appears Premature (08/27/10)

Posted Friday August 27, 2010

Any concerns that the reduction in the open stakes purses—along with the elimination of the World Trotting Derby and its companion filly event at Du Quoin—would severely hurt the caliber of horses coming from out of town for the American Nationals looks to be unfounded.

Saturday’s first two American Nationals of the season for three-year-old trotters of both sexes came up just fine.

In fact the $131,500 filly stake is loaded. Moreover it’s even stronger than a year ago when the purse was $150,000 and a $250,000 Filly World Trotting Derby at Du Quoin followed a week later unlike this time around.

Four of the first five finishers in the prestigious $750,000 Hambletonian Oaks will compete at Balmoral in Saturday’s American National filly fourth race-co-feature. Only missing is the winner Bar Slide.

The Oaks bridesmaid Ultimate Cameron (3-1 morning line) landed the pole position for driver Trace Tetrick. The third place finisher Springtime Volo (7-2) has the three-slot with Dave Magee. The Oaks fourth place trotter Behindclosedoors (8-1) drew the five post with Mike Oosting and the fifth place Oaks check-getter Bramalea Hanover (6-1) has the four with Marcus Miller.

Also coming to Balmoral is the recent $221,500 Moni Maker runner-up and winner of a $146,250 Del Miller division Glide Power (9-2, Jan Johnson); Duenna stake champion Cantab It All (8-1, Marcus Johansson); PASS stakes victor Secret Magic (10-1, Todd Warren); triple Ohio Sire Stakes champ Jesse’s Messenger (12-1, Ryan Stahl); Currie and Ives winner Levi’s Lady (20-1, Dewayne Minor), and the Virgil Morgan Jr. Stable’s Action-Broadway (12-1, Brett Miller) who took Mohawk’s Casual Breeze stake in mid-June.

The $150,000 American National for trotting colts and geldings lured Wishing Stone (programmed 4-1, Dave Magee), the third place finisher in the $1.5 million Hambletonian earlier in the month at The Meadowlands,  and the Julie Miller Hambo finalist Mystery Photo (3-1, Marcus Miller).

The Doug Ackerman Stable’s Great Emancipator (6-1, Brad Kramer) is back at the far south suburban facility looking for his 10th season triumph. The gelding won a Hanover stake division at Balmoral in July, as did Mark Fransen’s Big Sky Revenue (12-1) who drew the rail for driver Dale Hiteman.

Coco Lindy (5-1), fresh off a 1:54.3 victory (on a “good” track) in the $100,000 Colonial Consolation at Chester, drew post three for his driver-trainer Frank Antonacci. The Ackerman Stable also shipped-in Thro Time 8-1, (Mike Oosting), winner of 6 of 12 season starts, and Anette Lorentzon made the trip with Sailaway Dream (10-1, Trace Tetrick), a Bluegrass stakes runner-up as a freshman.

Local trainers Leo Grummel starts American National freshman champion Run And Tell Pap (15-1, Mike Cox), Brett Wilfong sends out PASS stakes winner Premier Hanover (15-1, Brett Miller) and Powerful Speed (10-1, Todd Warren) who captured a Hanover at two, starts for Illinois conditioner Tom Graham Jr. in the sixth race co-feature.

It’s a very nice Saturday evening card at Balmoral.

Supporting the pair of American National Trots is a 10-horse field in the $10,000 Filly and Mare Open Pace (race eight) and a seven-horse field in the $10,000 Free For All (race eleven) and neither are handicapped. Each was simply drawn.

Sandwiched between the two American Nationals is the $6,150 final of The Big Dog Series for two-year-old male pacers.
